Let’s be honest…the only person happy about Michael Jackson’s death was South Carolina’s Governor, Mark Sanford.
As the world processes the loss of the King of Pop, many focus on related stories. Some PR folks for example have been proclaiming TMZ is “Associated Press 2.0” and are all but dancing on CNN’s grave.
Personally, I see the mainstream media’s role in this differently than some – including Richard Laermer.
So we’re doing a point counterpoint – 250 words each on why the Michael Jackson Internet frenzy spells the death of mainstream media and the rise of TMZ and other emerging news outlets.
Who’s right? Who’s wrong? You’ll be the judge.

I'm a little over 250 words in my blog post http://mediacoachblog.wordpress.com/ but in a nutshell - it's not about old media vs new media it's about Celebrity and Immediacy, two values common to all media.
Some PR folks for example have been proclaiming TMZ is “Associated Press 2.0” and are all but dancing on CNN’s grave.

That's a joke, right?
All I saw/read was people looking for confirmation from ANYONE but tmz.
Guess we're reading different sources.
MJ even trumped the election participation. I wonder what that says about our society. What I know for sure is that People + TV + Mobile + Digital x #michaeljackson = instant phenomena.
I'm sure Mark Sanford is not the only happy person. The victims of Michael the Pedophile are surely celebrating, too.
If he was such a pedophile why was he never convicted? SOMEWHERE a jury felt there was reasonable doubt.
Also, wouldn't you (if you were the parent of a child who'd been molested by ANYONE) stop at nothing to see the perp behind bars? A large sum of cash, say $20million, would do nothing to deter you from ensuring that this person received the maximum punishment they could for messing with your kid, right? RIGHT?
So why, if the child was TRULY molested, did the first case end in an out of court settlement to the tune of $20 million?
Because the kid wasn't "really" molested, was he. The parents saw a really cool way to get some money.
Believe me, I think Jackson was a naive freak. But I also think he was a huge target that people tried to take advantage of whenever possible.
Frankly, I'm appalled that the real issues of the world are swept aside as was the passing of Farrah Fawcet (whose first name is so famous yet few news sites spell it correctly!) was summarily swept away as "old news" (quote from Larry King).
Jackson was a talented man. Agreed. But c'mon people... prioritize accurately here.
Lots of great conversation here.
Appreciate Ken's links and encourage more linking to similar PR discussions. But lets keep it focused on the media frenzy and not the various stories (good and bad) over the years that created this frenzy?
Thanks!
I think Jon and Kate were pretty happy about it too.
Peter King, the republican politican too was thrilled over the death of Michael, his crude comments were truly ugly, I wonder what skeletons he has in his closet. "Judge not lest ye be judged"
