We're sorting through tons of mail and we have some decent posts brewing. But today was noteworthy as one pitch in particular made the rounds. It was not the only bad pitch out there. But as I reviewed it I was inspired to single it out and pay homage to the SNL skit Really?! with Seth and Amy.
A blog pitch. Really?! Not merely a pitch to a blog, but a pitch about a blog to a blog?!
Really?! Did you send the pitch to your blog as well or was it implied that your boss would link to himself?
400 words to tell me to visit your boss’ blog. Really?! Well actually, one paragraph spent pitching the blog and two paragraphs telling us how if your boss were any more amazing he would wear a cape. Really?!
OK, the Bad Pitch blog would like to remind you to participate with blogs instead of blasting them with the same old press materials. But I guess when you have nothing but hammers in your tool box, and this agency has at least 5 of 'em, every single thing starts to look like a nail. Even a blog I guess.
For more details on this pitch, PR Blog Father Tom Murphy succinctly weighs in on its biggest issue in a much more direct fashion than the Bad Pitch blog.

Kevin,
ReplyDeleteI have to admit that reading your blog is one of my guilty pleasures, even if it does depress me to read about poor pitches.
It has been my experience that blog relations is actually MORE rewarding on a professional level than more traditional media relations. The chance to interact directly with experts provides a great opportunity to grow professionally. That is, of course, if you actually do it correctly.
Kevin,
ReplyDeleteIt's funny to see that both you and Tom have posted about this pitch because I received the same one...and I write a personal blog that doesn't strictly deal with topics related to PR! I had no idea how this guy found my blog and he didn't have a good answer when I asked him, but I checked out the CEO's blog and not gonna lie...I found some valuable posts. Maybe I'm a sucker or maybe I'm just too nice, but I felt bad for the guy and did link the CEO's blog to my blog...ONLY because I did find value in the CEO's posts. I will point out that the employee charged with spamming everyone with this e-mail did say I would be contacted by the PR company's CEO and he would definitely link to my blog. That was more than a week ago and I've yet to be contacted. Might have to think twice about keeping that CEO's blog linked to mine. At least follow through with your promises if you get someone to link to your blog...sheesh!
Just drank a cup of coffee and was laughing so hard I spit it back out. Brilliant and so true. You guys are my heros -see the little hearts fluttering around my head. :)
