The New Bad Email Pitch

Every day all of us get bad emails and I think I get more than most because I do a lot of things "for a living." At time I just shake my head so hard it hurts. O'Keeffe & Company is celebrating its 12th anniversary and sending "reminder notes" to something they never bothered to tell me about before(how can I remember). And what they're offering is simply silly - plus seems like the invite was tossed together like lumpy salad....

You've heard of the "Thrilla in Manila"
and the "Rumble in the Jungle," and
now, we invite you to the "Tussle for Twelve"
to celebrate our 12th anniversary.

Joe Frazier's three epic battles with Muhammad Ali were some of the greatest moments in boxing history. Come meet this legendary heavyweight champion on Thursday, May 14th from 5:00 to 8:00 p.m. at Ireland's Four Provinces in Falls Church, Virginia. As far as 12 rounds go, you'll know when to throw in the towel, but you have to make a reservation to get into the ring. -end dumb email-

Questions abound: Why is Frazier attending? Did he need a meal? Did he know the owners? Is his maiden name O'Keeffe?

You get my drift. People, come on-n-n. Be careful when you sending emails. There is NO mass appeal. You have to target them! In this deleted email, for instance, here are some facts: I do not know O'Keeffe from any-O-body, so this is a head scratcher. I'm nowhere near VA and I don't understand why I'm being invited. Am I a boxing fan? No. Am I on a list? Yes! Bingo.

Back to regularly scheduled programming, which lately has been some helpful tips for PR folks like me

I'm Twittering @laermer. And stuff.

Odd considering the quality of the O'Keefe agency. I guess everyone is capable of brain farts here and there.

  2. If done better, this could have been a knockout invite. Invitees would have been begging for ringside seats.

Unfortunately, it looks like it's flat on the canvas and down for the count.

And yes... this comment was tossed together like a lumpy salad.

  3. I receive invites for educational events. These are invariably short of information and I have to often call back.
I don't think it is a matter of targeting me specifically. It is in most cases just a matter of writing a proper complete e-mail.
