As we noted in an earlier post, Deirdre Breakenridge did a quick guest post for the Bad Pitch blog. She talks about the need for an inside-out approach to social media, having a purpose behind social media efforts and the need for PR people to step out of their comfort zone to truly assume the role of the hybrid PR professional. As the skill set continues to broaden, "complacency will not get you to the strategy table."

Deirdre - You make a great point about social media having a purpose. Asking yourself "Why do we want to communicate?" is the hardest step in social media. Just as in public relations, you need a strategy, without it you won't maximize your content and reach your target audience. Taking a part in social media, being active and moving forward absolutely gets to the strategy table. Great post!
ReplyDeleteGreat point about companies using social media internally before using it with external audiences. Because it's such a paradigm shift, it's important for all the areas of a company to understand how it changes its relationship with customers -- not just the customer service and PR teams. Thanks!
ReplyDeleteOur company is currently expanding its in-house PR team, and although we plan to maximize social media in our PR plans, it is hard to get out that comfort zones and figure out how to even go about it. You're right on the money about finding the purposes of why we need this. I'll study hard and hopefully present the right PR plans. Thanks!!!
ReplyDeleteSocial Media is now dominating the world and I haven't know infos like these yet, thanks for opening my eyes you did a wonderful job!

Internal social media used as a sharing forum is the precursor to launching the external social media. It’s important for the entire company to be on the same page before disseminating a message out to the public. Imagine what a disaster it would be if your consumers knew about something before your employees.
