Typos, Dirty Minds & Other SFW Topics
UPDATE: BPB Editorial Board founding member, David Parmet, has brought it to our attention that Rachael Ray's unfortunate cover is, in fact, a hoax. But read on, the rest is legit.
---
We've written about typos in the past. I've even written about them in my nefarious other blog. They're at the top of our industries point and laugh list. They are link-sharing porn. But we've all had a typo turn up in print, or land in someone's mailbox at one point or another. There are several types.
The ones called out the most seem rife with innuendo and skew inappropriately. Or perhaps this observation is just a sure sign the Bad Pitch is aging and/or has a dirty mind? Regardless of that self-insight, just know that the typos linked to in this post are safe for work.
Punctuation: As you can see in this post, Rachael Ray and Hannibal Lecter have never had fewer levels of separation; they're just a few commas away from each other. This pic has been burning up Facebook with everyone reconsidering any of Rachael's 30 minute meals that include chianti or fava beans.
Capitalization: Some racier typos remind us of the need for capitalization. Simple capitalization makes the difference between riding a horse and getting a happy ending.
Prooflooking: Your news release could be so in AP style it's asked to participate in Fashion Week, but before you strut down the catwalk, you should proof any and all graphics, photos or video subtitles that accompany it. As I note in an old post on photo bombs, "Proofreading needs to be more than simply reading copy. Graphics, photos, page numbers and other details we take for granted always need to be reviewed carefully.
Pet Peeves: From compliments that complement and effects that affect, there are are typos that annoy and others that spell check miss. So check yourself and remember these tips from Grammar Girl to avoid turning a well-turned phrase into something else entirely.
